Locations include:
Food containers should be empty and rinsed out before recycling them. Beverage containers need to be emptied before putting them in the bin. And paper products should be dry and free of food debris.
Did you know that electronics of all kinds can be recycled? The town of Normal accepts used electronic equipment (broken or damaged included) at the Public Works Garage on 1301 Warriner St, from 7am-2pm. These items are donated to Recycling for Illinois of Peoria, refurbished, and given to low-income persons with disabilities. For a list of other electronics that are accepted, visit the Town of Normal's Web site.
Yes. A lot of the local supermarkets in town recycle plastic bags. Both Kroger and Jewel Osco on College Ave. have a collection point for plastic bags as you enter the stores. If your local grocer doesn’t recycle plastic bags, tell them to start. And next time you go shopping don’t forget your reusable/cloth bags – then you won’t have any plastic bags to worry about.
Inside the recycling symbol on plastic containers, there is a number from 1-7. The number represents the type of resin used to make the container. Resins 1 and 2 are the most widely accepted in recycling programs, because there is a wider variety of products that they can be made into than some of the other resins. Plastic is not 100% recyclable. That means that the soda bottle you put in the recycling bin cannot be remade into another soda bottle. Instead it might be manufactured into a synthetic fiber like fleece. Other resins may be used to make products like plastic lumber. For more information about plastic resins check National Geographic’s Green Guide or The Daily Green A Guide to Recycling Codes.
Yes! ISU recycles 22 different commodities. In addition to the above items, we also recycle: scrap metal, light bulbs, wire, pallets, electronics, concrete, asphalt, batteries, oil, tires, ink/toner cartridges, and furniture.
Last year (2007-2008), ISU recycled 1,816 tons of material.

Recycle Mania - RecycleMania is a friendly competition among university recycling programs in the United States that provides students with a fun, proactive activity in waste reduction. Over a 10-week period, schools compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables, the least amount of trash, and have the highest recycling rate.
