Illinois State employees empty their individual office bins into the large blue bins located in the hallways. Plastic, glass, cans, paper, and magazines are put in the corresponding bins. Books and cardboard are placed next to or behind the bins.
Building Service Workers/ Recycling Ambassadors empty blue bins into a toter.
Toters with plastic, glass and cans are loaded into the recycling pick-up truck, while toters with books, magazines, paper, and cardboard are emtied into "Big Blue".
Commodities are then transported to the Town of Normal recycling transfer station, or for paper products, to Midwest Fiber.
From there, the commodities are shipped to a recycling facility where they are sorted, bailed and sold to manufacturers and made into new products. For paper products, commodities are transferred to a paper mill where it is made into new paper products. For more information on how recycled. Recovered paper is remanufactured into a new paper product check out Paper Recycling from Curb to Consumer.
By purchasing recycled products we are increasing the demand for recycled materials and helping to close the cycle in the recyling process.
